Your own firearm

Getting your own firearm

Owning your own competition pistol is not something you do in your first week. It takes membership, documented activity over time and an application to the police — in that order.

The route there

  1. Be an active member

You need to have been a member for at least six months and to have trained regularly over time. The police require documented activity, and the club keeps a record of your sessions.

  2. Have the safety course done

The safety course must be completed.

  3. Get the club's confirmation

Once the requirements are met, the club helps you with confirmation of your training activity and with how to apply.

  4. Apply to the police

The firearms licence application goes to the police. They decide, and they set the requirements.

  5. Sort out storage

An approved gun safe is required before you can collect the firearm. Get one in good time.

One piece of advice before you buy

Try several pistols at training before you decide. The club has firearms you can hire, and a pistol that fits your hand is worth far more than an expensive one that does not.
